  1. SHOULD YOU GO TO ROME?
  2.  
  3. Rome sports the reminders of 2,70 years of continuous 
  4. human habitation.  Through the grime and bustle of a modern, 
  5. crowded city, there's a special aura arising from walls that 
  6. have witnessed 135 generations of the great and the humble.  
  7. You can find the roots of Western civilization from behind the 
  8. Palazzo Senatoro.
  9.  
  10. You'll be riveted by the view before you of the Roman Forum 
  11. and the Palatine, with the Colosseum in the distance.  This is 
  12. the birthplace of a city, and of a civilization - our 
  13. civilization.  What the Greeks dreamt of doing, the Romans 
  14. did.  All that comes after in the Western world, comes from 
  15. here.  This is the heart and soul of Rome.  Those 135 
  16. generations have been sliced many ways by scholars.  For most 
  17. of us, though, the history of Rome has three high points: the 
  18. Ancient Era, the Christian Era, and the Renaissance.  If you 
  19. want to see the source of much of our language, literature, 
  20. art, architecture, governments and habits, you must see Rome.

  22. I group people into those who hate Rome and those who love 
  23. it.  There are few indifferent.  It's dirty.  (Oh for an 
  24. Italian Charles DeGaulle!)  It's crowded.  Its streets are 
  25. narrow, and its alleys crooked, crowded and sometimes smelly.  
  26. The residents seem in perpetual motion, and half the language 
  27. is "spoken" with eyebrows and hands, a skill that takes years 
  28. to learn.  They have four rush hours and once ate dinner at 
  29. 9:30 at night.  (Though fewer now go home for lunch, and some 
  30. restaurants are open as early as 7:30.)  The traffic is 
  31. dizzying.  Strikes disrupt your plans, plans that are almost 
  32. impossible to map out because of the crazy quilt of opening 
  33. days and hours.

  35. Why, then, visit Rome?  Beauty.  History.  Charm.  Sights.  
  36. The Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's.  The cradle of Western 
  37. civilization, much still evident.  A sidewalk cafe.  Sun-faded 
  38. pastel buildings glowing in the sunset.  Lovers strolling 
  39. arm-in-arm.  The Colosseum and the Pantheon.  Nowhere in the 
  40. West brings all these wonders together so intimately.  And, 
  41. finally, the food.  If you think you know Italian food, but 
  42. haven't eaten food in Italy, you're in for a wonderful treat.
